This is a mash of various old fantasy stories. We've got Dracula, werewolves, Dr. Jekyl and Frankenstein. The movie makes no attempt to explain any of these stories, instead we see lots of special effects, action, and monsters. Very fun to watch on the big screen, I like Van Helsing and the gypsy woman, but the main villain Dracula wasn't as fun.
After watching this movie I felt that I should probably do these characters some justice and go back and read Dracula, Dr Jekyl and Frankenstein again. I'm not sure were the werewolf story actually comes from though?
3 out of 5 stars.

Van Helsing is the latest harmlessly entertaining movie from the director of The Mummy. Like The Mummy, Van Helsing does not take itself too seriously, and the characters have some depth. Jackman's Van Helsing has a mysterious past, Frankenstein has a soul, and Anna Valerious is the last of her family line. Dracula, however, was not impressive or remotely frightening at all -- his hissing and shadowy slithering about does not strike as much fear into the audience as his mistresses. Mr Hyde felt like a recycled prop from The League of Extraodinary Gentlemen.
Although it felt like a marketing ploy for the computer games and other merchandising that I am sure will spin off from the film, it is still an enjoyable film as it doesn't pretend to be anything more.
