I didn't like this movie, mainly because it was a romantic story about a foreign country. A newly divorced woman goes and buys a villa in Italy.

I suppose if you are one of those girls that has romantic notions about Italy and dreams about falling in love with a handsome stranger then this is for you.

Annoying stereotypical characters everywhere. Watch a documentary or a travel show if you can't afford to holiday in a country. 1 out of 5 stars.

What is it with Hollywood films and their shallow depictions of other countries and cultures? A good movie is more than just beautiful scenery, and that is all that is on offer in "Under the Tuscan Sun". I'm bored of the caricatures that Hollywood continues to produce -- the adulterous French (see my previous review on "Le Divorce"), the amorous Italians, etc.

Beside showing one too many scenes of a character constantly munching gelato, and other cheap stereotypical shots at the Italian culture, "Under the Tuscan Sun" also tends to suffer from actor worship, evident in scenes showing Diane Lane: being exasperated, wide-eyed and overjoyed, being terrified by a thunderstorm, covered in dust / paint from renovations, cooking, being approached by strange Italian men, etc. As if Italian men would trip over themselves trying to win the affections of an American woman, when the Italian women are far more gorgeous! :)

"Under the Tuscan Sun" is nothing special and is lacking substance. Would probably make an average housewife escape fantasy, otherwise I'd rather be picking olives from the trees.
