Val Kilmer plays a hard, one-man special ops guy. He's not just all brawn -- he's got some brains too. He gets an assistant to go rescue the President's Daughter. The story has a refreshing twist to it but makes the whole movie feel a bit depressing and anti-American. It's a serious movie, so no cheesy lines and no excessive violence.
However, there is an Aussie that wants to be a hero and as a result, dies. I thought that character was a bit out of place, but it was amusing nonetheless
3 out of 5 stars.

I was a little apprehensive about watching "Spartan", as I had a bad experience with another movie about the U.S. president's daughter. However, my fears were soon allayed as I found myself quickly absorbed by the film.
"Spartan" is considerably one of the smarter military/political dramas I have seen lately, as it does not attempt to dumb down the jargon used in the military circles, nor bewilder us with protagonists that seem to have supernatural skills or uncanny luck. Unlike other films, the "bad guys" CAN aim! It is also different because it does not have a gung-ho patriotic feel to it.
I would recommend this highly absorbing, believable film to anyone who does not need spectacular explosions and high-tech wizardry to be entertained.
