When a film is based on a true story I end up being more interested the real life story. This story is about a female prostitute, Aileen, who kills seven different men after luring them from the Florida highways while promising sex. There is also her partner / lover, Selby, a lesbian, and she is not directly involved with these murders. Throughout the movie we see Aileen's ups and downs, and we get some voice over from her, describing different events in her life. This builds up a psych profile of her, so we can see the reasons behind her violent actions. In the movie, the murders slide from justified to reprehensible, I think this simplifies her character.

The character I don't understand is Selby, the movie doesn't explain her actions, but putting it down to child's immaturity doesn't seem right. I think she's a bit fishy and scheming!

Violent and depressing movie, with elements of 'good and evil', immaturity, and the failings of social welfare policies.

Excellent acting by Aileen and Selby. 3.5 out of 5 stars

I have no sympathy for anyone who visits prostitutes, as I've always felt that those who do are taking advantage of those who are disadvantaged. Who on earth would choose and enjoy working in the world's oldest "profession"?

Ignored, neglected and abused by society as a whole, Aileen was about to take her own life when she meets Selby, which is when Aileen is shown love for the first time in her life. Thinking she has a fresh start in live, Selby's love gives her renewed hope and the will to change her life and herself for the better. However, Selby's selfish demands forces Aileen back into prostitution, which leads to the tragic outcome which is soon revealed to us.

Charlize Theron's transformation is undeniably remarkable. But who was Aileen Wuornos? A collection of bad teeth, blotchy skin, swaggers and mannerisms? The movie attempts to paint Aileen as a victim, used and discarded by those around her. Her behaviour around Selby is typical of an alpha male, asserting herself as Selby's protector and provider. But who is watching out for Aileen? No one. Beneath the tough act, Charlize's Aileen is a pitiable woman in need of rescuing.

Christina Ricci's Selby is convincingly unlikeable -- selfish, spoilt, and immature, and desperate for attention and acceptance.

In all, an excellent but depressing movie about the demise of a prostitute. Click on the link below for an interesting article about Aileen.
