Hidalgo sounded like it was going to be an epic. Its about a horse, who joins a race across the desert.
The main actor is the rider of Hidalgo horse, but was rather lame, he just wasn't cool enough, even if he is in touch with his red indian heritage. You can see all the actors trying to act seriously, but the dialogue and scenes just aren't dramatic enough. You don't get enough time to know them well. Lots of racial snobbery and cultural differences blatantly shown between arabs, westerners, rich people, slaves, foreigners, infidels and red indians.
The race itself doesn't start until well into the movie, and by then I was eager for dirty tricks and plenty of horse racing scenes.
I wasn't disappointed, there's all the good stuff you expect from a desert race. Horses dying of thirst, and its arab rider being so hardcore he goes down with the ship. Locusts, guns, bribery, sandstorms, snipers, quicksand (this quicksand is wet. I think there can be a dry version too?), stakes, traps, mending of horse.
You also get to see lots of horses running around at the end. yay.
3 out of 5 stars.
